SPIRAL

It took a very long time to complete. It was the longest piece I had ever worked on. Zelkova wood is very hard and dense, which is why I feel it has a elastic nature. This property has the great advantage that it does not crack easily when it dries or when I apply force when carving. However, my arm muscles were screaming, and at times I seriously wondered if I would be able to finish it. In such hard times, I thought back to the years this zelkova tree has lived. Compared to that, I realized that the time I spent carving it was just a moment, and that the hard work would be forgotten.

完成までにとても長い時間がかかりました。今までで一番長い作品でした。欅材は硬くて密度が高いので、弾力性があるように感じます。その性質は、乾燥時や、彫るときに力を入れても割れにくいという大きな利点があります。しかし、腕の筋肉が悲鳴をあげ、本当に完成させることができるのだろうかと本気で悩んだこともありました。そのような時に、この欅が生きてきた年月を思い返しました。それに比べると彫っている時間はほんの一瞬で、その苦労は忘れ去られることだろうということに気づきました。

When I saw a photograph of it against a black background, I discovered a new fascination for zelkova wood. It is a charm with a texture like antique furniture. Its beauty is a characteristic of zelkova wood.

黒背景で撮った写真を見たとき、欅材の新たな魅力を見つけました。それは、アンティーク家具のような風合いを持つ魅力。その美しさは欅材独自の特徴です。

Enjoy the different expressions caused by several different ways of placing it. That is something we cannot experience with a flat sculpture. Bold placement, making you feel unstable, but actually stable - such placement was tried in this piece of sculpture.

複数の異なる置き方による表情の違いを楽しむこと。それは平たい彫刻では味わうことのできないことです。大胆な置き方で不安定に感じさせながらも、実際は安定している - そのような置き方を今回の作品で彫り試してみました。

How far into the wood did the damage extend? Depending on that, it meant that there was a big possibility I wouldn't be able to carve it into the shape I wanted. It was a gamble in a way, a curious exploration into an unknown world. In the end, it left a fascinating flavor.

その木材の傷んだ部分はどのくらい内部に広がっているだろう？その広がり方次第では、彫りたいかたちに彫ることができない可能性が大きくあったことを意味していました。ある意味、賭けであり、未知の世界への好奇心溢れる探索でした。結果的に、それは魅力ある味わいを残しました。

The sculpture is made from a single piece of wood, and it is the only one of its kind in the world. The wood grown for sustainable forestry is used. The 'KIDEKIWHORU' logo is engraved on it.
