This is one of the largest pieces of wood I have ever worked on, weighing 5.9kg before carving and less than a quarter of that when finished. Many areas were carved against the grain of the wood. This was hard work and the chisel blades were easily damaged. However, the cross section of the wood allows you to see the annual rings that have been accumulated over many years, which are proof that the tree has lived. The ivory colored thing in the video is reusable clay. At first, I think about what kind of shape I would like to create with the clay. Based on that, I carve the same shape as the clay.

これまでに手がけた木材の中でも最大級のもので、彫る前の重量は5.9kg、完成後はその4分の1以下になりました。木目に逆らって彫ることは骨の折れる作業で、鑿の刃先も傷みやすいです。しかし木材の断面の、その樹木が生きてきた証で、毎年積み重ねてきた年輪をありのままに見ることができます。動画に映っている象牙色のものは、再利用可能な粘土です。その粘土でどのような形の作品にするかを考えます。それを元にして粘土と同じ形を彫っていきます。

To represent one large, deep scar. The deeper the carving, the more I make its edges stand out, the more impressive it becomes. I tried to photograph it against a black background so that the light and shadows would give you a deeper sense of it.

大きなひとつの深い傷跡を表現すること。そのためには、深く彫られれば彫られるほど、その縁を際立たせば際立たすほど、印象深いものになります。黒い背景で光と影を見ながら、よりそれを深く感じていただけるように撮影してみました。

When you look at it from above, it represents the tree crown. Its undulations and curves give the impression of the determination to reach up to the sky, even as it endures the heavy snow and wind. The photo was taken using the same hinoki wood as the piece as a display stand.

上部から眺めたときの姿は、樹冠を表しています。うねりや曲線たちは、重い雪や風を受け入れながらも、その樹木が空へ向かって伸びて行く意志を感じさせるでしょう。その写真は、この作品と同じひのき材を展示台にして撮影されました。

Whenever I photograph my work, I realise and discover things about it that I would never have noticed at the time of sculpture. When I first realised that this appearance existed from this angle, I felt a new pleasure in being able to watch the flower blossom.

撮影時にその作品に対して、彫刻時には決して気が付かなかったさまざまな気付きや発見があります。この向きからのこの姿が存在することに初めて気付いたとき、お花が開花する様子を見ることができ、新たな喜びを感じました。

When carving hinoki wood, the grain of the wood becomes clearly visible. Depending on the direction and depth of the carving, you can enjoy watching the dance in various curves. In particular, this hinoki has a rich color variation, with dark, deep parts and light, pale parts.

ひのきは彫刻されると木目が明瞭にあらわれます。彫られる向きや深さによって、さまざまな曲線の木目が踊る様子を楽しむことができます。特にこのひのき材には色が濃く深い部分と薄く淡い部分があることで、豊かな色の変化も感じられます。

The sculpture is made from a single piece of wood, and it is the only one of its kind in the world. The wood grown for sustainable forestry is used. The 'KIDEKIWHORU' logo is engraved on it. The paint is safe because it is made from natural materials and it doesn't almost smell. Depending on each monitor, the colors may differ slightly from the actual work.

この彫刻はひとつの木材から作られており、世界にひとつだけのものです。持続可能な森林づくりを目指して栽培された木材が使用されております。KIDEKIWHORUのロゴマークが彫られています。塗料は天然素材なのでにおいもほとんどなく安全です。各モニターにより実際の作品と多少色が異なる場合がございます。
